Postdoctoral Fellowships in Database Research at the University of
Edinburgh

In connection with a recently awarded EPSRC platform grant, the
database group has two vacancies for postdoctoral research fellows.
The grant covers a wide area of database systems including, but not
only, the following topics:

Architecture-conscious database systems
Curated databases
Expressive power and complexity of query languages
Data Quality
Data provenance and annotation
Data archiving
Data exchange
Data security
Data integration
Peer to peer computation
Master Data Management
Query evaluation and optimisation
Schema mappings
Storage architectures and Flash-based storage
Web services and workflows
Web page clustering

While the positions are primarily open to database researchers with
promising academic records, all applicants with a strong background in
computer science will be considered. Skills in both theory and system
building are desirable.

Details of these positions are available at

http://www.jobs.ed.ac.uk/vacancies/index.cfm?fuseaction=vacancies.detail&vacancy_ref=3011134

Through which applications should be made (please be sure to attach
full CV and statement of research interests.)

Potential applicants may also want to want to contact informally one
of the investigators on this project: Peter Buneman (opb), Wenfei Fan
(wenfei), Leonid Libkin (libkin) or Stratis Viglas (sviglas) all at
inf.ed.ac.uk

In the past five years the School of Informatics at Edinburgh has
committed to increasing its strength in databases, and the database
group has now become one of the leading European research groups.
Aided by funding from the Royal Society, the UK Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council, IBM and the EC, the group has good
resources to support a broad research base in databases. The group
currently has nineteen primary members and several visitors.

The database group is part of the Laboratory for the Foundations of
Computer Science (LFCS), the best-known of the Institutes within the
School of Informatics. LFCS has traditional strengths in the
principles and theory of programming languages and has been the
incubator of some of the most profound connections between logic and
computer science. The School of Informatics itself is currently the
top-ranked computer science department in the UK.

As the capital of Scotland and a remarkably attractive city, Edinburgh
is a magnet for many international scientific activities. It is also
within easy reach of Scotland’s spectacular countryside, and it is
rated as one of the most “livable” cities in the UK. Edinburgh is a
natural hub for teaching and research within the whole of
Scotland. Moreover, within Edinburgh there are numerous users of
advanced database technology who are forming natural partnerships with
database research.

********************************************************************
Final Call for Papers

PaIR’09
2nd International CIKM Workshop on Patent Information Retrieval
http://pair.ir-facility.org/

November 6, 2009
Hong Kong (colocated with CIKM 2009)
——————————————————————–
Paper submission deadline approaching rapidly: July 17, 2009
IP keynote speaker confirmed: Ilkka Havukkala,
IP Office of New Zealand
********************************************************************

Goals
=====

Patent Information Retrieval specialists in the 21st century face
many challenges. They must search very large numbers of documents in
multiple languages expressing complex technological concepts
through sophisticated legal clauses. Despite a great deal of
theoretical development in Information Retrieval techniques,
advanced search tools for patent professionals are still in their
infancy.

The objective of the workshop is to provide a forum for Information
Retrieval and Knowledge Management scientists as well as Patent
Retrieval experts from industry to study the next generation of
patent search tools. We encourage IP professionals to present their
special information needs and IR&KM researchers to present relevant
technical ideas, for example for high recall search in prior art
searching.

We also promote exchange of ideas on measuring the progress of
system performance for retrieval tasks in the intellectual property
domain.

Topics of Interest
==================

This workshop solicits two types of papers: research and industry
papers. Suggested topics for research papers include, but are not
limited to:

* Cross-lingual information retrieval (esp. Asian languages)
* Patent classification
* Ontology-based retrieval
* Information retrieval evaluation
* Evaluation frameworks
* Test collections
* Large-scale information retrieval experiments
* Parallel and distributed information retrieval
* Ranking strategies
* Query validation and query quality analysis
* Query expansion
* Interactive retrieval
* Session-based information retrieval
* User modeling
* Handling of noisy data (OCR/spelling/typing errors)
* XML retrieval

Industry papers shall present research challenges.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

* Patent search workflow
* Patent search strategies
* Information need of the patent researcher
* Shortcomings of current patent search tools
* Case studies
* Challenges in patent search
* Patent life cycle
* Quality of patent data

Submission Guidelines
=====================

The Workshop Committee encourages the submission of high quality
research and industrial papers, which are not published or under
consideration elsewhere, with special emphasis on Patent Information
Retrieval methods. Research papers will be peer-reviewed by at least
3 members of the international program committee. Manuscripts should

There are two styles on the website. Both the Strict Adherence to
SIGS and the Tighter Alternate style are allowed. Papers cannot
exceed 8 pages in length. A website with camera-ready instructions
is available. Full papers should be submitted in PDF format to
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pair09 .

Selected papers will be invited to provide an extended version to be
edited in a book published by Springer.

Authors of selected papers will be invited to present their work in
course of a poster session. Note that these papers will be included

The acceptance ratio of the first four conferences has averaged less than 30%, and the proceedings have been published as part of the Springer Verlag series of Lecture Notes in Computer Science. The ICISS 2009 encourages submissions addressing theoretical and practical problems in information and systems security and related areas. We especially like to encourage papers in domains that have not been represented much in the past at the conference, such as database security/privacy, usability aspects of security, operating systems security, and sensor networks security. Papers that introduce and address unique security challenges or present thought-provoking ideas are also welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
