From: “Ying LIU” <mfyliu at polyu.edu.hk>

PhD Scholarship is available at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University

We are looking for an excellent student to pursue PhD with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Basically, the student will work under a Hong Kong CERG funded research project titled “On Relating Online Reviews to Quality Function Deployment in Engineering Design”. The project focuses on intelligently analyzing the online product reviews and linking them for optimal decision making in product design through quality function deployment. We are particu
larly interested in students with strong background in text processing, machine learning, data\text mining and optimization. Knowledge on quality function deployment and engineering design is preferred, but not compulsory.

It is expected to start the project from July 2009. The student must have a master degree or is expected to secure the master degree before the official registration at HK PolyU. He\she will be awarded full scholarship for 3 years and enjoy relevant conference fees and training opportunities.

Further information can be obtained from:

Dr. Ying Liu
Email: mfyliu@polyu.edu.hk

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

From: “Ying LIU” <mfyliu at polyu.edu.hk>

Call for Papers - ASME IDETC/CIE’09 Special Session (CIE-18) on “Design Informatics: Advances of Intelligent Information Processing and Knowledge Management in Engineering Design”

San Diego, California, August 30-September 2, 2009
http://www.asmeconferences.org/IDETC09/CallforPapers.cfm

Description
Design Informatics (DI) studies the representation, perception, processing, computation, communication, storage, retrieval and reuse of information and knowledge in the general context of design. Largely to the fast growing services offered by WWW, Semantic Web and Web 2.0, and the intrinsic complexity of information processing in design, an undoubted information and knowledge intensive activity, DI has emerged as a multidisciplinary research arena that links up various areas like information and communication technology, cognitive science and social science, computer science and artificial intelligence, design study and so on. It has been witnessed a pressing demand from the design professionals who are eager to enhance their capability in design information processing and management by harnessing some latest techniques, notably data\text\multimedia mining, semantic technology and ontology engineering, computational intelligence, service oriented architecture, etc. How to e!
ffectively manage the design knowledge in a global context (e.g. outsourcing) at both personal and enterprise wide levels challenges everyone in the community concerned. Hence, this Special Session calls for innovative, state-of-the-art research, technology development and applications of DI.

For the special session, interesting topics include, but are not limited to:
• Data\Tex\Web\Multimedia mining in design
• Information retrieval and search engine dedicated to design information, say CAD elements
• Enterprise knowledge management portal
• Semantic web, Web 2.0 and their application in design
• Information and knowledge digging on patents
• Social networking in design, design experts identification
• Knowledge based\agent based\hybrid intelligent systems
• Intelligent data acquisition and preprocessing in design
• Ontology engineering and ontology based system integration in design
• AI based decision support in design
• Knowledge management in ODM
• ……

Please choose CIE-18, the specified session code, when you submit your manuscript(s).

About the main conference
The 29th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (CIE’09) is an integral part of the 2009 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conferences (2009 IDETC/CIE) and will take place the San Diego Convention Center, in San Diego, California, from August 30-September 2, 2009. This Conference is sponsored by the Computers & Information in Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This conference provides a forum for enhancing the practice of engineering by understanding the application of emerging technologies that impact critical engineering issues of representation, product design and product development, exchange, management and integration of information throughout the entire engineering product and process life-cycle. A key theme for this year’s conference will be “bridging the gap between CIE research and practice”.
